A Clinical Study of Intestinal Obstruction



Abstract
This clinical report is based on a review of the records of 134 patients with the intestinal obstruction that were managed conservatively and surgically at the Department of Surgery of the Chosun University Hospital during 4 years and 9 months from April, 1971 through December, 1975.
The results of the study were obtained as follows;
1. The, common causes of intestinal obstruction were adhesion and band (20.1%), intussusception (17.2%), neoplasm (14.9%) and hernia (13.4%).
2. The peak incidence of age came in the 5th and 6th decade, on the, average of 51 years, and the sex incidence was male to female in the ratio of 2: 1.
3. The cardinal clinical manifestations were abdominal pain (81.3%), vomiting (64.2%), abdominal distention (53.7%) and abnormal peristalsis (43.3%).
4. The incidence of gangrenous change of the bowel was 19(18.6%) of 102 cases and leukoey-tosis was observed in 52.2%.
5. As for the operative procedures of 102 cases, 41 cases (40.2%) were treated by operative, release with decompression and 31 cases (30.4%) by primary resection and anastomosis.
6. Postoperative complications were observed in 26(25.5%) of 102 cases. The over all mortality rate was 10 (7.58%) of 134 cases and the most frequent cause of death was septic shock in 3 of 10 cases.
